Wilson believed the world needed a new system to avoid future wars, especially after the disaster of World War I. His idea was the League of Nations—an early version of what would later inspire the United Nations. He fought hard to make it part of the Treaty of Versailles, and it became one of the defining features of the peace agreement. Ironically, he couldn’t convince the U.S. Senate to join, partly because of political infighting. Wilson was heartbroken about that, because he saw the League as the key to long-term peace. Even so, his idea lived on and shaped future global cooperation. It’s still one of his biggest political legacies.
