Why was James A. Garfield assassinated?

Garfield was shot by a disgruntled office seeker named Charles Guiteau, who was angry that he didn’t get a government job he thought he deserved. At the time, politics still ran on the “spoils system,” where people expected rewards for supporting a candidate. Garfield wanted to reform that system, and that made some people upset. After the shooting, poor medical care made his condition even worse. He suffered for weeks before passing away. The tragedy shocked the whole nation. It pushed Congress to finally get serious about reforming the system Garfield opposed.
