Why was the 1876 election so controversial?

The 1876 election was one of the wildest in U.S. history, and Hayes won by only one electoral vote after a massive dispute. Both sides accused each other of cheating, and several states sent in conflicting results. To settle the chaos, Congress created a special commission that eventually handed the victory to Hayes. But Democrats only accepted it after a behind-the-scenes deal that ended Reconstruction. That deal changed the political and social landscape in the South for decades. Hayes became president, but a lot of people questioned the fairness of the process. It’s still talked about today because of how bizarre and tense it was.
