How did Calvin Coolidge become president?

Coolidge became president unexpectedly in 1923 when Warren G. Harding died during a cross-country tour. Coolidge was at his family’s home in Vermont, and his own father—who was a notary public—swore him in by lamplight. The moment became famous for showing Coolidge’s calm personality. He later ran for a full term in 1924 and won easily because many Americans liked his steady leadership. He promised to keep things stable and let prosperity continue. After finishing one full term, he decided not to run again in 1928. Coolidge believed that ten years in Washington was too long for any one person.
