Truman became vice-president in 1945 and then suddenly the president when FDR died that April—nobody expected the quick change. Lots of folks were surprised because Truman had been largely out of the loop on top-secret wartime planning while vice-president, so he inherited huge responsibilities fast. He had to finish the war, manage postwar diplomacy, and learn cold-war politics on the fly. Despite the abrupt start, he settled into the job and made bold calls quickly, like the decision on the atomic bombs and the start of the Marshall Plan. His rise showed how fragile leadership transitions can be in wartime. People later praised him for steadying the ship when it mattered most.
