Calvin Coolidge grew up in rural Vermont in a family with deep New England roots and simple traditions. His family was mostly of English ancestry, and they ran a small farm and general store. Coolidge worked hard in school and later became a lawyer in Massachusetts without going to a fancy law school. He slowly climbed the political ladder—city council, mayor, state senator, lieutenant governor, and then governor. People liked his quiet, steady style, which was very different from louder politicians of the time. His calm leadership during the 1919 Boston Police Strike made him nationally famous overnight. That attention eventually helped him get elected vice president and later president after Harding’s death.
