Coolidge married Grace Goodhue, a warm and friendly woman who balanced his very reserved personality. They had two sons, and family life was important to Coolidge, even though he was known for being emotionally closed-off. Tragically, his younger son died from an infection in the White House, something Coolidge later said permanently dimmed his spirit. Grace was very popular with the public and often helped soften Coolidge’s image. Despite being quiet, he enjoyed simple home routines and spending time with his family. His marriage was strong and steady, even if he wasn’t the most expressive husband. The Coolidges were seen as down-to-earth compared to some flashier presidential families.
