Herbert Hoover grew up in a Quaker family in Iowa and later Oregon, and his early life was pretty rough after losing both parents young. He studied engineering at Stanford University as part of its very first class, which was a huge deal back then. Before politics, he worked around the world as a mining engineer and made quite a fortune from it. His international experience gave him a reputation as a super-capable organiser. By the time he entered public service, he was known as the “great humanitarian” for his relief efforts. Many people were surprised someone with such a technical background entered politics at all. His unusual mix of business success and charity work made him stand out on the national stage.
