Truman was known for being blunt, loyal, and very private—he loved his family, cards with friends, and a good cigar now and then. He and his wife Bess had a close, steady marriage and they had one daughter, Margaret, who stayed close to them. After leaving the White House in 1953, Truman returned to Independence, Missouri, and lived a quieter life but stayed politically engaged with letters, speeches, and occasional commentary. He wrote memoirs and served on commissions, but he mostly enjoyed simple routines and company of old friends. Financially he left office not rich, but he later earned money from writing. He died in 1972, widely respected for his plain honesty and decisive leadership.
