Eisenhower’s presidency is remembered for keeping the country stable during some tense Cold War years. He pushed for the interstate highway system, which totally transformed travel across the U.S. He also worked hard to avoid direct military conflict while still standing firm against the Soviet Union. At home, he sent federal troops to enforce school desegregation in Arkansas, something many presidents might have avoided. He balanced budgets, expanded Social Security, and focused on long-term infrastructure. Even though his public style looked calm and old-school, he got a ton done behind the scenes. A lot of his policies still shape American life today.
