The Truman Doctrine was the president’s 1947 policy pledge to support countries resisting Soviet pressure—basically containment in words. It started with aid to Greece and Turkey and signalled the U.S. would back democracy against communist expansion. The Marshall Plan followed soon after and was a huge economic aid package to help rebuild Western Europe after the war. The idea was practical: rebuild economies so communism wouldn’t look attractive to desperate populations. Together these moves shaped early Cold War strategy and helped stabilise Europe. They marked the U.S. shift from isolation toward active global leadership.
