Eisenhower didn’t start out dreaming of a military career, but West Point appealed to him because it was a free education, which mattered since his family couldn’t afford college. He was a smart and steady student, even if he wasn’t obsessed with grades. When he finally got accepted, it opened doors he couldn’t have imagined otherwise. West Point gave him structure, direction, and the leadership training that later made him famous. He also built lifelong friendships there that helped shape his career. Even though he had a few rough patches, he graduated ready for service. That military education set the foundation for everything that followed.
