Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, and raised in a small town called Independence, so he really came from middle-America roots. His family background was mostly of English and Scots-Irish stock, and they lived a fairly ordinary, working-class life. He ran a haberdashery (a men’s clothing store) with his brother before World War I, so he knew small-business struggles firsthand. After serving in the war he returned home and slowly moved into local politics, eventually winning a U.S. Senate seat. He wasn’t from the Ivy League crowd—he was practical, approachable, and known for being straightforward. That down-to-earth image stuck with him in Washington. It made people feel he was one of their own when crisis hit.
