Truman approved the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 mainly to force a fast Japanese surrender and avoid a bloody invasion. His advisers argued an invasion could cost hundreds of thousands of Allied and Japanese lives, and Truman thought the bombs would end the war quickly. There was also a strategic element—demonstrating power to the Soviet Union was on minds of policymakers. The decision remains hugely controversial and is still debated by historians and ethicists today. Truman later said he weighed the terrible moral cost against the lives he believed would be lost otherwise. For many Americans at the time, the bombs were seen as a grim necessity to finish the war.
