Neil’s path to becoming an astronaut started with him being a Navy pilot and then a test pilot, which was basically the proving ground for future space explorers. He flew some incredibly risky aircraft, and that experience made NASA trust him with major missions. When he joined the astronaut programme, he was already known for staying calm under pressure. He trained like crazy, doing everything from survival training to engineering work. His reputation grew quickly, and he was chosen for Gemini missions before Apollo. NASA saw him as reliable, precise and cool-headed. All of that made him the perfect fit for the Apollo 11 mission.
