How did Nixon win the presidency and what were his main goals?

Nixon won the 1968 election on promises of “law and order” and a plan to end the Vietnam War with honour. He appealed to voters who were unsettled by protests and rapid social change, courting what he called a “silent majority.” His campaign emphasised stability, strong foreign policy, and restoring respect for institutions. Once in office he focused on reducing direct U.S. involvement in Vietnam while bolstering America’s global position. Domestically he pursued revenue sharing, new federal agencies, and some unexpected reforms on the environment and social policy. Nixon aimed to balance conservative appeals with pragmatic governance. That mix made his presidency unpredictable to both supporters and opponents.
