Before becoming president, Carter first served in the Navy and then returned home to manage his family’s peanut business. He eventually moved into politics and became a state senator in Georgia. Later he served as governor, where he pushed for reforms and more transparency in government. Carter worked hard to show he wasn’t controlled by political insiders. His approach made people see him as honest and independent. That reputation helped launch his run for the presidency. He appealed to voters who were tired of Washington drama and wanted a fresh start.
