Armstrong grew up in a rough neighborhood in New Orleans, but he found happiness in street music and local bands. He started playing cornet in a boys’ home where he had been sent for getting into trouble, and that’s where things changed for him. Music basically became his escape route and future. People who heard him even as a kid said he had something special. He worked odd jobs and played any gig he could get. His hustle was nonstop because he knew music was his way forward. That early grind helped shape the legend he became.
