Nixon’s foreign-policy record is probably the most praised part of his legacy. His 1972 trip to China reopened diplomatic relations after decades of isolation and shifted global power dynamics. He also negotiated arms-control measures like SALT with the Soviet Union to slow the nuclear arms race. Working with Henry Kissinger, Nixon used realpolitik — a pragmatic, interest-driven approach — to advance U.S. goals. Those moves helped ease Cold War tensions and opened trade and diplomatic channels that hadn’t existed before. Critics note some of the tactics were secretive or ethically shaky, but the strategic effects were big. Even rivals often admit the China opening changed international relations in a major way.
