Who was Richard Nixon and why is he remembered?

Richard Nixon was the 37th President of the United States who served from 1969 until his resignation in 1974. He rose from a long career in Congress and as Vice-President under Dwight Eisenhower. People often remember him for major foreign-policy moves like opening relations with China and pursuing détente with the Soviet Union. They also remember Watergate, the scandal that eventually forced him to quit — he’s the only U.S. president to resign. Nixon was a complicated figure: clever, determined, and frequently suspicious of rivals. His presidency mixed serious achievements with deep controversies that still spark debate. Historians continue to argue about whether his diplomatic wins outweigh the political damage of Watergate.
