Why did Gerald Ford pardon Richard Nixon?

Ford pardoned Nixon because he believed the country needed to move past the Watergate crisis. He thought a long trial would keep America stuck in political drama. The decision was extremely controversial and hurt his popularity. Ford always said he did it to heal the nation, not to protect Nixon personally. Many historians now say the decision may have helped the country stabilise faster. At the time, though, it was risky and emotionally charged. Ford viewed it as the hardest choice of his presidency.
