Why did Jimmy Carter focus so much on human rights?

Carter believed deeply that every person deserved fair treatment, partly because of his upbringing and faith. He wanted the U.S. to stand for moral values, not just political power. This meant pushing other countries to respect people’s freedoms and safety. His human-rights approach sometimes caused tension with foreign governments, but he stayed committed. Carter felt that America should lead by example. Even critics admitted he was consistent and sincere about it. That focus later inspired a lot of his humanitarian work after the presidency.
