He was born in London’s East End and started performing as a child on the music-hall circuit.
Chaplin co-founded United Artists to get creative control over his films.
He composed music for many of his movies and released recordings later in life.
His moustache was a practical choice — smaller than Victorian styles so it wouldn’t hide facial expressions on camera.
He starred in, wrote, directed and edited most of his major films — a true one-man show.
Chaplin received a special Oscar in 1972 for his “incalculable” effect on the film world.
He lived his later years in Switzerland and kept working on music and memoirs until his death.
