Charlie Chaplin was English — born and raised in London — with family roots in the British working class. His background was very much shaped by the Victorian urban environment of London, which blended different local cultures and the rough-and-ready life of the time. He didn’t focus on ethnic labels; instead, his identity came from that London upbringing and the theatre world his parents belonged to. Chaplin’s art reflected experiences common to many immigrants and working families who packed into industrial cities. That British working-class perspective is clear in the characters he created. It helped him connect to global audiences who recognised struggle and humour in daily life.
