Chaplin grew up in a poor London family and times were pretty rough when he was a kid. His parents were both music-hall performers but struggled with poverty and illness, so Charlie and his brother faced long spells in workhouses and a tough childhood. Even so, the music-hall world handed him a performance education from an early age. He started acting as a child and learned to make people laugh while working on the stage circuit. That hard early life fed his empathy and the bittersweet notes you hear in his films. He never forgot where he came from and often drew on those memories in his work. Family hardship shaped both his comic voice and his desire to succeed.
