Churchill was born into an aristocratic family: his father was Lord Randolph Churchill and his mother was Jennie Jerome, an American socialite. The household mixed British political tradition with transatlantic flair, so he grew up around privilege but also high expectations. His parents travelled widely and their marriage was stormy, which meant Winston spent much of his childhood with tutors and away from home. He went to boarding schools and later to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, where he trained as an officer. Family connections helped open doors in military and political life, but Churchill also worked hard to prove himself. He remained close to parts of his family while being fiercely independent in career choices. That background made him comfortable both among elites and on the battlefield.
