Churchill was British with a mixed British and Anglo-Irish aristocratic heritage, and his mother was American, which added a bit of international flavour to his roots. His paternal line belonged to the Spencer-Churchill family, a branch of the English aristocracy with long ties to the country’s ruling class. The American side of his family, the Jeromes, brought money, social connections and a certain brashness that contrasted with traditional British reserve. Churchill often moved comfortably between British and American circles, which proved useful in diplomacy later on. He identified principally as English and as a servant of the United Kingdom, despite the international strands in his family tree. Overall, his background combined establishment pedigree with an outsider energy from his mother’s side.
