Ella Fitzgerald was African American and grew up in Harlem, which was a major centre for Black culture and the arts. The Harlem Renaissance and the thriving jazz scene of New York shaped the music she heard as a child. That environment introduced her to gospel, blues and swing—all of which she absorbed and transformed in her singing. Her background influenced how she interpreted songs with soul and swing. Ella’s career also helped break down racial barriers in music venues and recording studios. She toured globally at times when segregation and prejudice were still rampant. Her success became a source of pride for many in the Black community.
