Ella Fitzgerald was born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia. She grew up in Harlem, New York, after moving with her family as a child. Her early years were tough, and she dealt with poverty and family troubles before music changed her life. Ella rose to fame after winning a talent show at the Apollo Theatre in 1934. She kept performing and recording right through the 1940s, 50s and beyond. Ella passed away on June 15, 1996, but her recordings keep her voice alive today. People still listen to her when they want beautiful singing and real swing.
