Franklin married Deborah Read, and together they raised two children, including William Franklin who later became the royal governor of New Jersey. He also had an older son, William, born before his marriage. His relationship with William broke apart during the Revolution because William remained loyal to the British crown. Franklin and Deborah lived apart for long periods when he was overseas, but she supported him until she died. Their letters show both affection and stress from distance. Family life for Franklin was never simple.
