Musk grew up in South Africa and was a quiet kid who preferred books, video games, and computers. He taught himself programming at around 10 and sold his first game, “Blastar,” when he was just a teenager. Later he moved to Canada and then the United States to study and find business opportunities. He didn’t exactly come from nothing—his family was upper-middle class—but his career wasn’t handed to him. Musk earned degrees in economics and physics before dropping out of Stanford. He jumped into startups at the dawn of the internet and never looked back. That early curiosity became the base of everything he does today.
