Aretha was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but she grew up mostly in Detroit, Michigan. Her father, C.L. Franklin, was a famous preacher, and her home was full of gospel singers and musicians. She started singing in church at a really young age, and people immediately noticed her voice. Life wasn’t always easy because her mother passed away when Aretha was just 10 years old. Still, she found comfort in music and toured with her father’s gospel shows as a young teen. Those early years shaped her musical style and gave her confidence. By 18, she was already signed to Columbia Records.
