How did Stephen King get his start as a writer?

King started out publishing short stories in magazines while he worked odd jobs and taught high school English. His first big break came when his debut novel sold and became a bestseller, which let him quit teaching and write full time. He famously threw away an early draft of a novel but his wife rescued it from the trash and encouraged him to finish it. He struggled for a while like many writers, submitting stories and learning the craft on the job. Early success moved fast and he kept writing, which built his huge back catalog. He’s said many times that persistence and daily work were huge parts of his success. That mix of hustle and talent is what launched his career.
