Before the Senate, Rubio worked his way up the Florida political ladder. He was elected to the Florida House in 1998 and kept winning re-election. Eventually, he became Speaker of the House, which is a huge job in state politics. He pushed reforms focused on taxes, jobs, and education. Outside politics, he practiced law and taught at a university level. He didn’t come from money or connections—he built his career by grinding and trying to represent middle-class families. His rise makes him a classic “self-made” political figure.
