Ultra-conservative José Antonio Cast has won the second round of Chile's presidential election, the Associated Press reports. According to the results of the December 14 ballot count, Cast received 58.2% of the vote.
His opponent, Jeanette Jara, a Communist Party member and former Labor Minister, received 41.8%. In the first round, Cast received 24% of the vote, while Jara was leading with 27%. Cast will be Chile's first ultra-conservative president in more than 35 years.
"Chile needs order — order on the streets, in the state, in the priorities that have been lost," Cast declared in his victory speech. He said he views the results of the second round as a "broad mandate" given to him by the country's people, which also represents a "huge responsibility" for him.
Jara congratulated Cast on his victory and, addressing her supporters, noted that "defeat allows you to know yourself better." Argentine libertarian President Javier Miley and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, among others, have already congratulated Cast on his victory. "The left is retreating," Miley commented on the ultra-conservative's victory in Chile.
