How big is Kharg Island and how many people live there?

Kharg Island is relatively small compared to most inhabited islands in the region. The total area is about 20 square kilometers, which makes it easy to cross in a short drive. The island’s population is small as well, with just over 8,000 residents recorded in recent estimates. Most of the people living there work in oil-related industries, shipping, or services that support the energy sector. There is a small town on the island called Kharg that serves as the main residential area. Because the island’s economy depends heavily on oil exports, much of its infrastructure is built around energy facilities and shipping terminals. Despite its modest size and population, its global energy importance is extremely large.
