Kharg Island played a major role during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s because of its oil terminals. Iraqi forces repeatedly targeted the island with airstrikes in an effort to damage Iran’s ability to export oil. Many of the island’s facilities were heavily damaged during these attacks. For a period of time, Iran had to shift some oil shipments to smaller nearby islands and terminals. Repairing the damaged infrastructure took years after the war ended. Even with these setbacks, Iran eventually rebuilt and expanded the oil facilities there. Today the island remains one of the most important oil export locations in the Middle East.
