LaVell Edwards was the legendary head coach of the BYU Cougars football team and one of the most successful coaches in college football history. He led BYU to national prominence with innovative offenses and steady winning seasons over his 29‑year career. Under his leadership, the Cougars won a national championship in 1984 and produced some of the most exciting offenses in the country. Because of his impact on the program and his lasting legacy in Provo, the university renamed the stadium after him in 2000. Fans still talk about “Coach LaVell” with a lot of respect because he helped build BYU football into what it is today. He’s also remembered for mentoring players who went on to play in the NFL and for being a big part of the campus community. Naming the stadium after him was kind of a no‑brainer for Cougars fans and alumni.
