Stromboli is a pretty famous volcanic island off the coast of Sicily in southern Italy, and it’s part of a small group of islands called the Aeolian Islands. It’s known as one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with regular small explosions that you can sometimes see at night from a distance. Because it’s so visible and active, locals have nicknamed it the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.” The volcano rises steeply out of the sea, and the island itself is small, with just a few tiny towns and villages scattered at the base. People love visiting not just for the views, but for the unique chance to see volcanic activity up close (safely and with a guide). The peaks of Stromboli actually let off puff after puff of lava and ash pretty much constantly, but these are usually small bursts rather than huge explosions, which keeps scientists and tourists alike fascinated. Whether you’re into geology, hiking, or dramatic scenery, Stromboli stands out as something unforgettable in Italy’s volcanic scene.
