On the night of October 4, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched an airstrike on the southern part of the Lebanese capital. At least 11 rockets were fired at Beirut, an AFP correspondent reported.

The target of the missile strike, The New York Times writes, citing three Israeli sources, was the shelter of Hashem Safieddine, who is believed to have replaced Hassan Nasrallah as the leader of Hezbollah. The IDF command did not officially comment on the target of the strike on Beirut.

According to NYT sources, the airstrike was carried out at the moment when Safieddine was holding a meeting with senior members of Hezbollah. It is not yet known whether Safieddine was killed, the publication's interlocutors said.
