Experts interviewed by the agency believe that the favorites this year also include the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the International Court of Justice, and the organization's Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. At the same time, experts note that awarding the prize to UNRWA will cause controversy, especially against the backdrop of reports that several agency employees were involved in the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
In turn, the favorites among bookmakers were Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, who died in prison, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Reuters writes that Navalny cannot be awarded the prize, since the award is not presented posthumously, and Zelensky is unlikely to win because he leads a country at war.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee may also decide that no one will receive the prize this year - this has happened 19 times in the history of the award, the last time in 1972.
"Perhaps this year the Nobel Peace Prize Committee should simply not award the prize and pay attention to the fact that this is a warring planet," Dan Smith, head of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, told the agency.
