The area that is now Scottsdale was originally inhabited by the Hohokam Native American tribe. The first European to visit the area was explorer Marcos de Niza in 1539. The city was founded in 1894 and was named after its founder, Winfield Scott, who purchased the land in order to establish a cattle ranch.

In the 20th century, Scottsdale became a popular destination for tourists, due to its warm climate and natural beauty. The city is known for its many resorts and spas, as well as its many golf courses and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Scottsdale is also home to a number of cultural attractions, including the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The city is also home to a number of historical landmarks, including the Old Town Scottsdale Historic District and the Casa de Hermoso.
