The area that is now Fort Lauderdale was originally inhabited by the Tequesta Native American tribe. The first European to visit the area was Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León in 1513. The city was founded in 1911 and was named after a series of forts that were constructed by the United States during the Second Seminole War.
