History of Salem, Oregon: when Salem was founded and how it developed.

USA / Oregon / Salem

Salem, Oregon is the capital city of the state of Oregon, and has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century.

In 1842, the first American settlers arrived in the area, led by a man named Jason Lee, who established a Methodist mission. The mission was located on the banks of the Willamette River, which would become the site of the future city of Salem.

In 1844, the Oregon Provisional Government, the first government of the Oregon Country, was established in Salem. The city was named the capital of the provisional government and it served as the capital of the Oregon Territory when it was created in 1848.

In 1851, Salem officially incorporated as a city. Over the next few decades, the city continued to grow and develop, with the establishment of new businesses, schools, and infrastructure. Salem played a key role in the state's agricultural industry and became known as the "Cherry City" because of the cherry orchards that surrounded the city.

During the 20th century, Salem continued to grow and expand, becoming a major center for government, industry, and education. Today, Salem is a diverse and vibrant city with a rich history, a thriving economy, and a wide range of cultural and recreational opportunities.

It's also worth noting that Salem has a dark side in its history, it has been known for the Salem Witch Trials in the late 17th century. This event led to the execution of 20 people, mostly women, for the accusation of witchcraft, it's considered one of the most tragic events in American history.
