Blade Runner 2049 producers accuse Tesla, Musk, and Warner Bros. Discovery of copyright infringement

The movie studio Alcon Entertainment, which participated in the production of the film Blade Runner 2049, accused Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, as well as the media conglomerate Warner Bros. Discovery of copyright infringement.

The studio filed a lawsuit in a Los Angeles court. It says that Alcon rejected a request from Warner Bros., which acted as the distributor of Blade Runner 2049, to use footage from the film during the broadcast of the presentation of Tesla robotaxis on October 10.

“Any reasonable brand considering a partnership with Tesla must take into account Musk’s pervasive, highly politicized, capricious, and arbitrary behavior, which sometimes verges on hate speech,” the lawsuit says.

Ultimately, according to the studio, the electric car maker used an image during a presentation that was generated by artificial intelligence and replicated a frame from the film.

The lawsuit does not name specific amounts of damages, but it does say that Alcon spent “hundreds of millions of dollars” to create the Blade Runner 2049 brand, and that “the financial scale of the misappropriation was significant.”

Alcon fears that the defendants’ actions could cause confusion among the studio’s customers and partners in the Blade Runner brand, including those working with the company to produce the Blade Runner 2099 miniseries for Amazon Prime.

In early October, Elon Musk and Tesla at a presentation on the Warner Bros. Discovery in California presented the Cyberсab robotaxi. The event also showed the Robovan autonomous van and Optimus robots.

Soon after the presentation, the director of the film "I, Robot" Alex Proyas criticized Musk, comparing the appearance of androids, taxis and the Tesla van with the robots and cars from the film.
