John Towner Williams, the most iconic film composer

Born on February 8, 1932, in Floral Park, New York, John Towner Williams grew up to become just about the most iconic film composer this country’s ever produced.
If you’ve ever been to a movie theater in the last 50 years, chances are you’ve heard his music—heck, you’ve probably felt it in your bones.
Now, his old man, Johnny Sr., was a jazz percussionist, so music was already in his blood. When the family moved out to Los Angeles, young John got serious about the piano. Studied at UCLA for a bit, served in the Air Force (yep, he was an Airman), then went on to Juilliard. That’s where he really sharpened his skills—classical training and all that.
But it wasn’t long before Hollywood came calling. In the '50s and '60s, he worked as a pianist and orchestrator, playing for film and TV scores. He even played piano on To Kill a Mockingbird and West Side Story. Before you knew it, he was scoring his own films—smaller ones at first, but then boom! He hit it big.
His big breakout came in the '70s when he teamed up with a young fella named Steven Spielberg. You might’ve heard of a little film called Jaws (1975)? That two-note shark theme? All Williams. That score alone won him an Oscar, and it pretty much changed how people thought about movie music.
From there, it was a run of hits you wouldn’t believe:
Star Wars (1977) – probably the most famous film score in history.
Indiana Jones, E.T., Jurassic Park, Superman, Schindler’s List—all him.
Even the first few Harry Potter movies? Yep, that magical music’s Williams, too.
He's been nominated for over 50 Academy Awards—only Walt Disney has more. As of now, he's won 5 Oscars, 25 Grammys, 7 BAFTAs, and 4 Golden Globes. The man’s practically an American treasure.
And he didn’t just stick to movies. He wrote themes for the Olympics, NBC News, and more. The guy's music is everywhere.
Now, John retired from scoring films full-time a few times—most recently after The Fabelmans (2022), another Spielberg joint—but like all true artists, he never really stops. As of his 90s, he’s still conducting concerts and writing new music now and then. The man’s got more energy than folks half his age.
All in all, John Williams isn’t just a composer—he’s the sound of our collective memories. The way some folks talk about Elvis or Sinatra, that’s how movie lovers talk about Johnny Williams.
