Phoenix is very car-friendly, but not super walkable in most areas. The city is so spread out that public transport doesn't reach everywhere easily, and the heat makes walking tough for half the year. That said, downtown Phoenix and some areas of Tempe and Scottsdale are more pedestrian-friendly, with bike paths, light rail access, and shaded walkways. Most locals rely on cars to get around — and don't be surprised to see tinted windows and windshield sunshades in nearly every vehicle. If you're visiting, renting a car is probably your best bet.
