Detroit’s population peaked in the 1950s at over 1.8 million people. Since then, deindustrialization, suburban flight, racial tensions, and economic decline have led to a sharp drop. Today, Detroit has fewer than 700,000 residents. This massive shift has left many homes and buildings empty, which contributes to blight and makes city services harder to maintain.
