After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum experienced periods of neglect, repurposing, and decay. It was used as a quarry for building materials, a fortress by noble families, and even a Christian shrine. Earthquakes in the Middle Ages caused significant damage, and vegetation overtook parts of the structure. In the 18th and 19th centuries, efforts began to preserve the monument. Today, it is protected as an important cultural and historical site.
