The Empire State Building was completed in 1931 and held the title of the world’s tallest building for nearly 40 years. It was built in just over a year, a record at the time, especially considering the Great Depression. The building is struck by lightning about 20–25 times each year. Its Art Deco design has made it an iconic symbol of New York City. On clear days, you can see up to five states from the observation deck. It has featured in more than 250 movies and TV shows, including "King Kong." Each night, its tower lights change colors to honor events and causes.
